The city of Durban in South Africa knew an amazing growth in its two centuries of existence. The municipality focuses on tourism a lot so top quality hotels are now virtually everywhere. Don't cut down on expenses and look for accommodation in the city center or in some of the safest areas in the city, as criminality is still an issue in Durban. If you stay yourself out of harm's way though, this will be a very enjoyable trip.
